FAQ

Product Questions Answered

French clay tiles feature a signature interlocking design with built-in ridges that create a tight seal against rain and wind. Unlike standard flat or barrel tiles that rely on overlapping, French tiles interlock on all sides for superior weatherproofing. Their built-in drainage channels shed water rapidly, reducing moisture buildup and the risk of mold significantly.

Each French clay tile has two prominent vertical flutes that create a distinct shadow effect and high-dimensional texture on the roof surface. The deep interlocking locks on all four sides provide a secure, weathertight fit against heavy rain and strong winds. Despite their textured appearance, they sit closer to the roof deck than barrel tiles, making them suitable for both heritage and modern architectural styles.

French clay roof tiles weigh between 2.5 to 3.5 kg per tile and add significant load to the roof structure. They are heavier than asphalt shingles but often slightly lighter than concrete tiles. A professional structural assessment is recommended before installation, especially for older buildings or re-roofing projects where the existing framework may need reinforcement.

French clay tiles are natural insulators that absorb heat slowly and release it gradually, preventing the roof from overheating living spaces below. The interlocking design creates a natural airflow layer beneath the tiles, improving passive cooling performance. Their dense clay mass also significantly reduces rain noise and external sound compared to metal roofing.

French clay tiles need very little routine maintenance. Debris and moss should be cleared periodically using a soft brush or low-pressure rinse, and high-pressure washing should be avoided as it damages the tile surface and loosens mortar. Individual cracked tiles can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the roof, and annual visual inspections help catch any issues before they cause leaks.
